"Repetition" is a quartet date that was recorded two years earlier, same location. It was originally released on the Musica label as "No more". It was reissued on CD on the Bloomdido label in 1990 as "Good news". So, this is the third time around for this session. The program is a straight reissue with no additional tracks : Repetition/Don't blame me/I wish I knew/ Tats/ No mmore/ Haroosh/ Embraceable you. 44:58). Here Gourley sounds much different. His tone is more brittle and his attack is much more aggressive. This may be due to the fact that the quartet has a more forceful drive due to Victor Lewis'dynamic drumming. The rhythm section (Lou Levy, p ; Marc Johnson, ba ; Lewis, d) was backing Stan Getz n his 1981 European tour. So it should come as nos surprise that guest saxophonist Dju Berry (on "I wish I knew" and "Embraceable you") should sound so naggingly familiar. It's Getz, himself, presumably under a pseudonym for contractual reasons. His solo on "Embraceable you" is one of the disc's highlights. Gourley's arrangement of Neil Hefti's "Repetition" showcases every aspect of this quartet, from lewis' hyperactive Latinesque drumming to johnson's nimble and powerful bass work to Levy's deft pianistics.
